Founded on the idea that effective training can only happen when a good bond and good communication exist between handler and dog, this method allows individual handler-dog teams to progress at their own speed. Different breeds, and individual dogs, may require different lengths of time and repetition to effectively learn to perform the exercises contained in this book. While many trainers claim a dog can be trained to perform to this level in only a few weeks, the authors show that effective, long-lasting results can only be achieved with time and patience, and especially, that training methods which force the dog to perform under stress or duress are doomed to produce dogs which lack confidence and perform inconsistently.

There is a great need for a clear and well-organized manual for training dogs for K9 Schutzhund (K9 Protection Dog) or I.P.O. (Internationale Prufungs Ordnung), which is Schutzhund according to the international rules.
That is why we, with our years of experience as professional K9 Schutzhund trainers and instructors, went to work on designing a practical training method for both the Schutzhund and I.P.O. program.
Writing about K9 training is not such a simple thing. There are a lot of methods leading to certification, and the sometimes biting and heated discussions about K9 training matters show that we cannot agree all the time. That doesn't make it simpler to write a book about training for the Schutzhund program. Because we hold a certain opinion, we become the critics of other K9 trainers.
Practice has proven very clearly that the methods described in this book, to train dogs in the different phases, are very successful. But we must emphasize that it is impossible to learn K9 training solely out of a book. Working with a dog on the training field under the direction of a professional instructor and also helpers, who are skilled track-layers or decoys, is of decisive importance for success! This book is only meant to deliver theoretical support to the work on the training field.
Our method is certainly not a fast one, and that is probably what our critics, and there will no doubt be some, will seize upon. In the first place, we start with the understanding that when there is no bond between the handler and the dog, it is impossible to work with that dog. They have to understand know each other absolutely, which is only possible when they are in each other's company all the time.
When there is good communication between handler and dog, then it is possible to teach the dog what is required after a certain command. Some dogs learn fast, but others need more time. That not only differs among breeds, but also among individual dogs, and we always have to have the necessary patience to teach the dog what he has to do after hearing a certain word. That takes time, but your patience will be rewarded!
